A small percentage of the world's teenagers are changed into vampires when adolescent hormones trigger a strand of what is otherwise junk DNA. The change from human to vampire takes four years, during which time the adolescents, known as "fledglings," must attend one of the "House of Night" boarding schools. While there, they are required to take the Vampire Sociology 101 course to learn the dangers they face, along with normal high-school classes. If a fledgling is not in constant proximity to adult vampyres, the fledgling will die; so the fledglings rarely leave the school grounds. About one in ten fledglings die anyway, since their bodies cannot tolerate the Change from human to vampyre. For those who survive, there's a big reward: in the words of some, "Vampires are like Superman. They’re super-gorgeous. They’re super-talented. They’re super-men." Vampyres are physically stronger than most adult humans, with accelerated reflexes, enhanced dexterity, as well as heightened senses such as night vision.
Vampires and fledglings are not destroyed by sunlight, as in many vampire novels, but it is painful to them, so classes at the House of Night are held at night.Fledglings are marked by a sapphire blue crescent-shaped outline on their foreheads; when they become full-fledged vampires, this mark becomes solid and they receive more 'tattoos' which extend over their cheeks.
Their beliefs are strange ones, mainly based on pagan and Wiccan, along with strong native american beliefs. They believe solely in the goddess Nyx, and vampires can communicate with her in ways of magick circles, and those chosen to be high priestesses. The Magick circles can also be used to call upon the elements; earth, fire, air, and water, which some people chosen can call upon certain elements to do their bidding without the magick circle. For example, a vampire could possibly have ties to one or two elements. Although Nyx is the embodiment of Night in a literal divine personification, she is actually very similar to what people typically consider the Earth Goddess, Gaia. Nyx is found everywhere, she is most powerful at night, which is why her special children have always been vampyres. Since ancient times, vampyres have honored Nyx by living in a matriarchal society where women rule, but men are honored and respected for their roles as guardians and companions. Nyx ensouls the earth – filling rocks, trees, rivers and mountains with her spirit. She is known by many names including Changing Woman, Gaea, A’akuluujjusi, Kuan Yin, Grandmother Spider and even Dawn. Often she gifts individual fledglings and vampyres with special powers. Those so gifted are also given the additional responsibility of becoming leaders among their kind such as High Priestesses or Warriors. Nyx is a benevolent Goddess. She is not jealous or vindictive, but she does not tolerate liars and her path is not always an easy one to tread. So, choose wisely…

It has become dangerous for fledgling to leave school grounds because of this. Because of this, fledglings are required to hide their mark when leaving, and to not have any relationships with humans other than family, and feeding has been forbidden.

~All students (and professors) must wear clothing with their class symbol while inside school grounds.
~Students are permitted to modify their uniforms however they wish, as long as they add their class symbols.
~Students are forbidden to wear anything with their class symbols outside the school grounds.
~All fledglings must cover their mark when they leave school grounds. Concealer is located in your bathroom.
~All fledglings are forbidden to be involved with relationships with any humans that are not strictly family.
~Curfew is 6 am: No boys are to be in the girls' dorm after this time, and vice versa.
~You do not choose your cat, the cat chooses you.
~Feeding from humans is expressly forbidden, for fledglings and adult vampyres alike.
~Girls must sleep in the girls' dorm and vice versa.
~The school's High Priestess's word is law.

Sixth Former: Senior, fourth year, Insignia: The silhouette of the three faiths. The three faiths are children of Nyx and the goddesses of destiny. Represents the end or break of the students' time at their House of Night.

The Dark Daughters and Sons is the House of Night’s premier fledgling organization. Its members are the best and brightest of our school and set the standard for the other fledglings. The Leader of the Dark Daughters is chosen because Nyx has gifted her with extraordinary powers. This young woman is considered a High Priestess in Training and has the added responsibility of both performing monthly rituals dedicated to Nyx and leading the fledgling members in the rituals. The Leader of the Dark Daughters is mentored by the High Priestess of the House of Night,
who takes special interest in her development. Membership in the Dark Daughters and Sons is by exclusive invitation only.
The symbol for the Dark Daughters is the traditional symbol for the Triple Goddess: two crescent moons back-to-back against a full moon. The Leader of the Dark Daughters wears a silver pendant with the symbol, a full moon encrusted with garnets.
Affinities are, essentially, gifts given to fledglings by Nyx. Affinities rarely manifest in the same way, however they do come in certain categories. As the vampyre society is matriarchal, four out of five times, affinities are given to females, however, there is the occasional male who is also gifted.
Vampyres gifted with affinities often end up as high priestesses, warriors, or professors.
